Located north of Marennes, a few kilometers from the ocean, facing the Ile d’Oléron, Hiers-Brouage is the perfect place for history buffs. The citadel’s ramparts and iconic turrets stand in the middle of the marshes that provide an incredible variety of fauna and flora. You can hike along one of the many trails and see herons, egrets and swans. You can see nesting storks in the spring. Many artists and artisans display their work in several galleries within the fortified walls. There are often exhibitions.
